A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
