The artist has handed over the entirety of his £25k award winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the United Kingdom's grassroots concert spaces.

The star was given the prize on 16 October as his new release the album was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has decided to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages played in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved my current career if it wasn't for all the gigs I played around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These venues are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these locations have permanently closed – roughly 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

Sam Fender also joined in, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to support numerous small stages across Britain.

These funds helped locations that were facing possible closure due to challenges caused by floods, fires and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and sound issues.

Other venues received monetary aid in upgrading amenities and technical equipment that helped artists and concertgoers.

"The notion that funds from shows in big venues backs the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just logical," Fender has commented.

The first in the city and The Croft in that location were acquired under the Own Our Venues program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
